The Strength & Success VLOG #92
This video is about “The Elephant and the Twig”.
In India when they’re training elephants for ceremonial processes, events that kind of thing.
What they do is they tie the baby elephant to a tree. With a piece of rope and when the elephants are baby,it has no way to break free from that tree.
As the baby elephant grows into an adult elephant, there’s no reason or no possibility that the tree could still hold.
But yet the elephant doesn’t try to escape and the alpha trainers are so confident in this, that they actually use a twig and a piece of string or a very thin piece of rope to secure the elephant.
It’s developed a condition referred to as learned helplessness.
And this is a psychological condition that the elephants develop where they
just do not believe that they can break free from this tree.
So what’s the parallel here? Why am I telling you this story?
Think about your youth, your background.
Think about how many times you were told that you had to get a job a safe and secure job.
Think about how many times that the phrase we don’t do that from round here, people like us don’t do things like that.
Maybe it’s to do with wealth.
Maybe it’s to do with starting a business.
Maybe it’s to do with reaction, reaction to conflict to leading people.
Whatever it maybe think about you now wanting to move forward. What is holding you back?
Very often the things that we refer to in our youth, are still holding us back now.
We are still that adult elephant attached to that tree and we don’t believe we can break free. Yet, we can.
So how do we recondition ourselves?
How do we unlearn this concept and take control?
Well, the first thing without question is accepting that we are, we have bigger ambitions and we’re afraid to break free. Acceptance of that.
The second thing is then to go and find or study some models of people who have done that, doesn’t need to be exactly the same but people who have done what you’re trying to do.
Then put yourself with like-minded people.
People will support you when you’re feeling a bit shit and you feeling down on confidence.
Then you need a break down all the steps that would go into making that giant leap.
And then I’m afraid the hard stuff happens, just get going.
The amount of people that can do those first steps, but still don’t do anything Is astronomical I’m afraid.
Don’t be one of those people that continue to be that elephant suffering with learned helplessness.
It really is in your control, but you have to make a decision to change!
