So I had a conversation the other day with a sports coach, a very talented coach.
The meeting was focused around career development.
This coach wants to change things up.
It really surprised me how the conversation went.
I thought I was in for basically a business planning, a career planning session and I was looking forward to doing that.
What was quickly evident was that this coach is really struggling to change and that everything that they suggested let alone I suggested, was instantly met by themselves with not one or two, but at least three reasons why it wouldn’t be possible.
“There’s too much competition here”.
“They won’t like it”.
“I’ve tried that and it hasn’t worked” .
And what was happening was there was a lot of mind reading, this person was reading the minds of other people and taking what he thought they were thinking as reality and that is mind-reading and no one out there, not even Derren Brown or Paul McKenna can do that.
The only way to find out what somebody is thinking is to ask them, then you might not get the right answer, It’s certainly a step forward, the only way to find out if somebody would work with you
would partner with you. Is to ask them and so my parting words to this coach was very simple.
Go and have coffee with all the people that might be able to open doors to connect you with people and not even that just people that you want to rekindle a relationship with because if your mind reading you’re not going to get very far, you’re distorting reality and how often do we do that?
How often do you do that?
I’m guilty of that. I know I have to check myself on that.
If you’re thinking that you know, what other people are thinking before they’re thinking it and before you ask them.
You’re barking up the wrong tree.
Stop, pause, unpick, go and ask that person for a meeting face to face or on the phone and find out what they’re thinking!
