VLOG #107 – Preparing for keynotes – My father does it this way
So I had a conversation with my father the other day and it was regarding public speaking.
I’d been down to the Therapy Expo and i’d given a keynote.
My dad’s a detail guy. He really is a fastidious individual and it’s a massive strength.
We talked about his career
He’s a head teacher.
How did he prepare for his assemblies?
How did he prepare for his presentations?
He had to almost rehearse and know every single line and I totally get that.
A quote by Mark Twain which says “”It takes me about three weeks to prepare for a good impromptu speech””.
This quote is very relevant, you do still have to prepare, you do still have to know your structures.
I’m Different to my old man in that.
I have a structure, a skeleton structure for a presentation.
I have slides with photos on them with minimal words. I can take it off tangent and come back around.
I still know the opening lines.
I still know the closing messages.
You cannot turn up to an important presentation and wing it.
But I also don’t think that you need to know every single line because we’re not acting as somebody else here. We’re still playing the part of ourselves and that’s the difference between giving a keynote presentation that has dynamism passion and energy and value, versus reciting lines!
