VLOG 138 – Alot about a little
Should you know a little bit about lots or a lot about a little bit?
It’s generalist vs specialist here.
The reality is if you’re running a business, you need to know a little bit about a lot.
So you need to know about finances, about HR, about sales, about marketing, about operations and about the product you sell or provide.
And if you come through a technical route, let’s say you’re an accountant, you know a lot about accounting and you know a lot about finance. If you come through as a personal trainer, you know a lot about the product of fitness and coaching, you know a lot about coaching, but you may well need to learn a lot or certainly a little bit about sales, marketing, operations, finance so you have a well rounded view of your business as a whole.
Again accounting example, if you’re an accountant, you’re going to be really good, really hot on the finances but what if you’re a technician like a plumber or a personal trainer or a life coach?
What is that super strength that you’ve got there?
And only you know what that is. Whatever that looks like, that is a power that your business has that you drive, you are the power there whether its sales, whether its marketing, whether its operations, you absolutely own that space and the things that you’re not as keen on that don’t excite you as much, as you’re not as good at these areas, you just need to learn a little bit about them and have some education on them. So you can have a well rounded understanding of the business.
You might not want to do that. You might have somebody else doing it, but you have your super strength over here that drives the business and you’re the power of that business.
So to come back to my original point. You need to know a little bit about a lot and you need to have one or two super strengths in your business to accelerate it!
