Coping with depression- don’t suffer in silence
Around the middle of last year I wasn’t getting much done.
In my terms I was slacking off. Really procrastinating.
Thing was though…I didn’t know what to do. And it kept circling round my head…
“what to do next…where to begin…”
It was a matter of should I do it this way, should I change this, or keep it the same. Etc etc.
Not only did I feel lazy… it was also stressing me out big time.
I went to see one of my friends who is a mentor of sorts to get some clarity. We discussed the different things going on and why. We discussed some personal matters that were affecting my decision making ability.
We broke things down and decided that I would start with some of the things on the list literally just to get them off the list, as well as learn if it helped me to gain more clarity.
In essence I followed the zig zag principle.
Ever heard of this before? (It’s one of my Power Principles in my new book!)…
What it means is that when you don’t know exactly the right way to move forward, you just do something.
By doing something you move somewhere. Generally we ‘kind-of’ know the general direction will be something forwards.
And by doing that something you learn…’was that the right thing to do’?
If it was, you keep doing it. If it wasn’t you change direction slightly.
And you go again.
And then you learn from that movement and change direction again.
In time you create a zig-zag line.
And the overall effect is forward movement.
And this is the zig zag principle.
See just getting going with something gives you inspiration to continue.
So start that book, write that blog, record that video, take that job, open that gym, quit that job, close that gym.
And you will learn from that and find your forwards.
Don’t expect it to be easy though. We often have to really strain to create momentum. Expect that.
